Leinweber Foundation gifts $18.4M to establish physics institute at UChicago

A significant financial contribution from the Leinweber Foundation will facilitate the establishment of a new institute for theoretical physics at the University of Chicago. This $18.4 million donation is part of a broader initiative that has resulted in a network of similar institutes across several prestigious institutions, including the University of Michigan, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The total philanthropic support for these initiatives amounts to $90 million.

The newly formed Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics at UChicago will have its own research agenda while participating in seminars, workshops, and public lectures aimed at tackling complex scientific questions such as quantum entanglement and dark matter. "When philanthropists invest in fundamental research, they invest in society’s long-range capacity for discovery and innovation," said UChicago President Paul Alivisatos.

UChicago will contribute an additional $4.6 million to combine with the foundation's gift, creating a $23 million endowment to support this endeavor. The new institute aims to continue UChicago's tradition of pioneering work in theoretical physics by providing fully endowed fellowships for faculty research and recruitment of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Larry Leinweber, founder and president of the Leinweber Foundation, expressed his commitment to advancing America's scientific future through this initiative. "Theoretical physics may seem abstract to many, but it is the tip of the spear for innovation," he stated.

Dam Thanh Son will serve as the inaugural director of UChicago’s Leinweber Institute. He will lead efforts focusing on various areas within theoretical physics such as symmetry, metamaterials, quantum field theory, string theory, quantum entanglement, and hydrodynamics. Son highlighted that endowing positions at both graduate and postdoctoral levels would help train future scientific leaders.

The institute will also act as a collaborative hub within UChicago by bringing together theorists from existing institutes like Enrico Fermi Institute and James Franck Institute. Additionally, it will incorporate initiatives from Kadanoff Center for Theoretical Physics into its framework.
