Today marks Global Accessibility Awareness Day, an occasion to reflect on the importance of digital inclusion within communities. The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is taking steps to enhance its digital accessibility practices, aligning with recent updates to ADA Title II. Jason Maslanka, Chief Technology Officer and Chair of the Digital Accessibility Steering Committee at UIC, shared some progress highlights.
The university has launched the Digital Accessibility Resource Hub, which serves as a central point for information and resources related to digital accessibility. In addition, over 725 faculty and staff members have participated in training sessions aimed at improving digital accessibility across more than 700 websites and numerous course materials.
Furthermore, more than 24 colleges and units have received consultation services regarding ADA Title II compliance. Many colleagues have also engaged in accessibility office hours. These efforts are aligned with UIC's learning management system transition and website redesign to ensure lasting impact.
Maslanka acknowledged that significant work remains, including developing a consolidated accessibility dashboard and addressing inaccessible digital content. However, he expressed optimism about UIC's growing momentum and partnerships positioning the institution as a leader in higher education digital accessibility.
For those interested in learning more or seeking support, Maslanka encouraged visiting accessibility.uic.edu.
Jason Maslanka concluded by thanking everyone for their commitment to creating a more accessible environment at UIC.
