Former cemetery worker charged for theft of over $100,000 in funeral payments

A Cook County Sheriff's Police investigation has led to charges against a former employee of a Glenwood cemetery, accused of embezzling over $100,000 from funeral expenses payments. Sheriff Thomas J. Dart disclosed that Latrecia Marshall-Parris, 48, is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly diverting funds from funeral-related payments for her personal gain.

The investigation began in August 2023 after cemetery staff reported that a customer had handed cash to Marshall-Parris for a headstone. However, the employee deposited a smaller amount into the employer's account. Marshall-Parris's role involved assisting families in planning funerals, including handling cash purchases for headstones.

Detectives uncovered evidence that over a period from April 2022 to August 2023, Marshall-Parris skimmed payments from families 49 times, totaling more than $114,200. Subsequently, she was dismissed from her position.

An arrest warrant was issued for Marshall-Parris on March 27, 2025, and she was apprehended on April 16 by Harvey Police. She was then transferred to the custody of the Sheriff's Police.

On April 17, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Marshall-Parris with two counts of continuing a financial crime enterprise, one count of felony theft, and one count of theft by deception/intent.

Appearing in court on April 18 at the Markham Courthouse, she was released from custody pending trial. It is important to recall that all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
