City Colleges celebrate growth and success of athletics program

Student athletes from the City Colleges district came together to celebrate their achievements over the past year. The event marked a year filled with triumphs and challenges for the athletic programs.

Chancellor Salgado addressed those in attendance, highlighting the effort required to balance academic responsibilities with athletic commitments. "Since returning to play in Fall 2021 after COVID, City Colleges Athletics has expanded from 15 teams to 26 teams across five sports—volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball, and track & field," Salgado stated. He noted that 159 student-athletes maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, with 26 achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA.

The athletics program witnessed significant achievements during the 2024-2025 school year. These include three Region 4 Champions in women's volleyball, men's soccer, and women's basketball. Additionally, the program produced three Region 4 Players of the Year and three Region 4 Coaches of the Year.

A major highlight was the Olive-Harvey Women's Basketball team's historic advancement to the national tournament, their first since the Malcolm X College women's team achieved this in 2012. Coach Jeff Dillard of Olive-Harvey was honored as the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
