Soprano Karen Slack, who recently won a 2025 Grammy Award, is set to conduct a vocal master class at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. The event, taking place on April 30, is part of the Tichio-Finnie Vocal Master Class series and is organized in collaboration with the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Lyric Unlimited program. This master class will be held at the Galvin Recital Hall and is open to the public. Slack will coach voice and opera students from the school, including Kenneth Dulay, Solamada Pando Girard, Molly Snodgrass, and Zachary Voigt.
In addition to Slack's master class, Northwestern’s Evanston campus will feature performances of Monteverdi’s opera “L’incoronazione di Poppea” and a presentation of a new opera “The House on Mango Street.” These events will also be accessible to the public.
The Bienen School of Music, in conjunction with the Lyric Opera, presents "L’incoronazione di Poppea," directed by Joachim Schamberger and conducted by Stephen Alltop. The production will showcase the Baroque Music Ensemble and incorporate a modern twist on the historical opera. It will be held from May 29 to June 1 at the Cahn Auditorium.
Moreover, author Sandra Cisneros and composer Derek Bermel will conduct a reading, discussion, and performance session from their upcoming opera project, “The House on Mango Street,” on May 7. The event will include poetry readings by Cisneros, a conversation between the author and Bermel, and performances of select arias. Joachim Schamberger will moderate this evening at the Pick-Staiger Concert Hall.
Tickets for these events are on sale through the Bienen School Ticket Office, with varying prices for the general public and discounted rates for students with valid ID.
