Daley College President Janine Janosky participated in a panel of Seal of Excelencia leaders at an event organized by Excelencia in Education. The event marked the launch of a new report, “30 years of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs): Improving Access to Quality for 30%.”
The report provides an analysis of Hispanic-Serving Institutions for the 2023-24 academic year. It states that over 600 institutions have gained HSI designation, making up 20% of colleges and universities. These institutions enroll 30% of all undergraduates and over 60% of Latino undergraduates. HSIs are also noted to graduate 31% of all students and 66% of Latino students nationwide.
Currently, there are 602 HSIs, 418 Emerging HSIs, and 257 graduate-level HSIs. The release includes supporting materials such as a Factbook on HSIs, a Fact Sheet, Infographics, StoryMapping tools, a dashboard, and an essay on the creation of the HSI list.
Janine Janosky's leadership saw Richard J. Daley College receive the prestigious Seal of Excelencia in 2023. This recognition is for institutions that show intentionality and impact in serving Latino students. “The Seal affirms our commitment to intentionally serving our Latino students," Janosky stated. "We are proud to implement impactful quality initiatives and programs supporting the success of our students in achieving their goals and increasing graduation and retention rates.”
In the following year, Richard J. Daley College and Arturo Velasquez Institute’s Community Health Worker Program became a finalist for the 2024 Examples of Excelencia. The program is acknowledged for using culturally relevant, evidence-based practices and is one of 18 finalists from across the nation.
