Animals at Lincoln Park Zoo adapt to snowy conditions

Chicago (February 21, 2025) – At Lincoln Park Zoo, many animals are well-adapted to the cold weather typical of Chicago winters. Zookeepers have been observing and documenting the footprints left by these animals in the snow. The zoo ensures that all animals can enjoy both indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year.

According to General Curator Dave Bernier, "Making sure the animals at Lincoln Park Zoo are safe and comfortable is our number one goal all year long. We adjust our care plans with the changing of Chicago’s seasons, and we love to see certain species thriving in the snowier months." He also mentioned that matching footprints to specific species or individuals has become an enjoyable activity during winter.

Lincoln Park Zoo focuses on animal welfare, providing options for animals to stay outside or retreat indoors as they prefer. Outdoor habitats include features like climate-controlled spaces and heated rocks for comfort.

The zoo plays a significant role in conservation efforts both locally and globally. Established in 1868, it remains a key part of Chicago's history as a privately-managed, member-supported organization open every day of the year.
