The Chicago Blackhawks, in collaboration with the Chicago Blackhawks Foundation, are set to host their annual "Hockey Fights Cancer" night on Sunday, January 26, at the United Center. The event is part of a broader NHL initiative and will see the team face off against the Minnesota Wild. This year's game is presented by CIBC, which has contributed $20,000 towards cancer-related causes.
Fans attending the game will have an opportunity to receive a purple knit hat provided by CIBC, with distribution limited to the first 10,000 attendees. Atrium doors open at 3:30 p.m., followed by gates opening at 4:30 p.m.
The event aims to honor those affected by cancer through various activities. Attendees can personalize "I Fight For" signs available on every seat and participate in a collective moment of recognition during the game's first period. Fans unable to attend can download and share their own signs online using #HockeyFightsCancer and tagging @NHLBlackhawks.
A highlight of the evening includes Blackhawks season ticket member Linda Klean participating in sounding the goal horn alongside mascot Tommy Hawk. Linda celebrates being cancer-free for 17 months following her battle with breast cancer.
Six young individuals currently battling or having overcome cancer will join the starting lineup during the national anthem as part of partnerships with local organizations like Camp One Step and Make A Wish Illinois. Additionally, Isaac Vasquez will conduct a ceremonial puck drop before the game starts.
Stephen Foltin will ring the Blackhawks signature bell, marking his completion of treatment after adopting sled hockey amid his cancer journey. His participation was announced by Chicago Blackhawks players during practice on January 23.
DJ White Shadow will perform during intermission to provide entertainment and support for attendees. In partnership with Cancer for College, two scholarships are being awarded to survivors Cameron Harris and Mya Lang-Martinez.
"Hockey Fights Cancer" began in 1998 as a joint initiative between the NHL and NHLPA. It unites various stakeholders across all 32 NHL teams in support of patients and families affected by cancer.
Sunday's match begins at 6 p.m., available on Chicago Sports Network, WGN Radio, and Latino Media Network radio at 1200 WRTO-AM.
