Today, Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) have introduced a public awareness campaign to inform Chicago residents of their rights if stopped by federal immigration agents. This initiative features advertisements on video screens throughout the transit system, guiding riders to online resources regarding visits by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
"Chicago will always be a Welcoming City, not just by ordinance, but also with our inclusive and loving spirit," stated Mayor Johnson. "Our 'Know Your Rights' campaign in collaboration with the CTA is a demonstration of our commitment to protecting and supporting all people of Chicago. I appreciate President Carter and the CTA for implementing this awareness campaign and I look forward to our City's continued efforts to stand strong in our welcoming stance."
CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr., expressed support for the campaign, stating: “We want to affirm that our public transportation system is looking out for the constitutional rights afforded to all who ride our trains and buses.”
The ads are displayed on over 400 screens across the CTA system and include a QR code directing riders to the City’s Know Your Rights website. The site provides resources in English, Spanish, and French from organizations such as The Resurrection Project, National Immigrant Justice Center, and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
Additionally, resources are available for those impacted by family detentions by ICE. The website offers information including an ICE locator link for individuals believed to be held by ICE.
Further information includes guidance contact details for USCIS’ hotline about immigration court proceedings and tips for obtaining free immigration legal services.
CTA screens now feature 'Know Your Rights' information, directing riders to multilingual resources.
