The Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University is set to host a series of voice and opera events this winter, featuring notable artists and innovative performances. Among the highlights is a vocal master class led by acclaimed soprano Sondra Radvanovsky on January 30. Radvanovsky will share her expertise in Verdi and bel canto singing with students from the Bienen School's voice and opera program.
Soprano and scientist Heidi Moss Erickson will present a recital-lecture titled "Widening the Radius" on February 3. The performance will blend music, neuroscience, and personal storytelling, drawing from Erickson's recovery journey following a cranial nerve injury in 2007. Together with her husband Kurt Erickson, she will explore the connections between brain function, music, and vocalization.
Later in February, Karen Slack will perform alongside pianist Mark Markham in a recital named "Dream Variations." Slack is recognized for her advocacy for Black classical musicians and has performed globally with major opera companies. The recital will include works by composers such as Undine Smith Moore and George Gershwin.
The season concludes with a modernized staging of Franz Lehár’s comedic opera “The Merry Widow” by Northwestern University Opera Theater. Directed by Jen Pitt with new English dialogue, this production takes place in present-day Paris and promises romance and humor.
Tickets for these events are available online or at the Bienen School Ticket Office.
