Professors reflect on Jimmy Carter's legacy ahead of state funeral

In Evanston, Illinois, professors from various disciplines are reflecting on the legacy of former President Jimmy Carter ahead of his state funeral in Washington D.C. on January 9. Richard Joseph, a political science professor emeritus at Northwestern University, emphasized Carter's unique post-presidency and highlighted the innovative programs initiated at the Carter Center.

Historian Michael Allen remarked on Carter's presidency as being perceived as disappointing by many. However, he noted that "it is his post-presidential career as a diplomat, a pro-democracy crusader, and anti-poverty home builder" that will be more fondly remembered by Americans. Allen described Carter as "a good man but an ineffective president," attributing this to the nation's uncertainty about leadership direction following Watergate and the Vietnam War.

Richard Joseph recounted his experiences working with Carter at the African Governance Program at the Carter Center. He recalled being asked by Carter about Africa's most significant challenge and responding with "governance." Under Joseph's direction from 1988 to 1994, the program supported democratic transitions and conflict resolution during significant global changes.

Journalism professor Storer H. Rowley shared his memories of Carter’s work as an election observer in Panama in 1989. He noted how Carter publicly held General Manuel Noriega accountable for election fraud. Rowley described Carter as a role model for leadership and service, emphasizing his commitment to human rights in American diplomacy.

As reflections continue on Jimmy Carter’s life and work, these professors agree that history may reassess his achievements more positively than before.
