Today, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced Sean Harden as the new President of the Chicago Board of Education. This appointment is part of a series of key appointments aimed at guiding Chicago's public schools toward greater equity and opportunity for all students.
Mayor Johnson expressed confidence in these new appointments: “I am confident that these appointments are ready to enact my vision for a transformational school district. Utilizing the blueprint outlined in my transition report and the Chicago Board of Education’s 5-year Strategic Plan, these appointees will ensure every child in Chicago has access to the world-class education they deserve.” He added, “As a former middle school teacher who fought for an elected school board, I am excited by this historic first step that will build a foundation for a more equitable and thriving public education system.”
Sean Harden, hailing from the South Side and previously serving as Deputy CEO of Chicago Public Schools, brings extensive experience in education, workforce development, and community revitalization. His leadership is expected to further the administration's goals concerning equity and opportunity through community engagement and systemic change.
The team joining Harden includes Anusha Thotakura, Ed Bannon, Karen Zaccor, Norma Rios-Sierra, and Pastora Emma Lozano. Each brings unique expertise reflecting Chicago's diverse communities.
Anusha Thotakura is known for her work on policies supporting working families and her volunteer efforts as a middle school Debate en Español coach. Ed Bannon has experience in local journalism and economic development while parenting three CPS graduates. Karen Zaccor co-founded Uplift Community High School and has been active in securing funding for sustainable community schools. Norma Rios-Sierra combines her artistic skills with activism to empower communities like Logan Square and Hermosa. Pastora Emma Lozano champions bilingual education and immigrant rights through organizations such as Centro Sin Fronteras.
“Each of these leaders brings a unique perspective and an unrelenting commitment to the success of Chicago’s students,” stated Sean Harden. “Together, we will prioritize equity, amplify community voices and create opportunities that unlock the potential of every child in our city.”
These newly appointed members will join current board members Debby Pope, Michilla Blaise, Frank Thomas, and Olga Bautista.
