UChicago professor and alum receive Nobel Prizes for economics and chemistry

Two individuals from the University of Chicago community have been honored with Nobel Prizes in a ceremony held on December 10 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Professor James A. Robinson was awarded the 2024 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. He shared this accolade with Professors Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson from MIT. Robinson's work, which examines the disparities between wealthy and impoverished nations, has had a significant impact on global leaders.

John Jumper, an alumnus who earned his SM in 2012 and PhD in 2017, currently working at Google's DeepMind, received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was recognized alongside his colleague Demis Hassabis and David Baker from the University of Washington for co-developing an AI model that predicts protein structures.

During the Nobel Prize celebrations, each laureate presented a lecture on their field of expertise.
