Daley College instructor Margaret Larkin has been honored with the 2024 Chicago Silver Dome Award by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. Larkin, who teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) and Digital Literacy, has been part of Daley College for 18 years, including its satellite campus at Arturo Velasquez Institute.
Expressing her affection for her work environment, Larkin stated, “I love the southwest side. I love the people I work with. I like helping people.”
Her award-winning story emerged from her connection to the southwest side and focused on Anthony Solis, owner of Prime Tacos. The story was one of four Hispanic Heritage Month features she developed, highlighting both tragedy and triumph in Solis's family history and his restaurant venture with his brother.
Reflecting on her achievement, Larkin said, “[Winning this award] means a lot because I worked in media for 17 years. I’ve been online for 30 years. To win an award for a digital piece is confirmation I’ve done well. It’s linked to my teaching experiences at City Colleges as well."
Larkin emphasized the importance of positive narratives from the south side: “The south side gets a bad rap,” she noted. “There are a lot of positive stories like this on the south side."
Her recognition came in the "Best Radio Station Use of Non-Broadcast Media" category for her collaboration with WGN-AM Radio. The Silver Dome Awards celebrate excellence in Illinois broadcasting.
Beyond teaching, Larkin is also known as a writer, podcaster, livestreamer, and interviewer. Her accomplishment adds to the legacy of City Colleges instructors who have excelled across various fields.
