Mathew Knowles, a prominent figure in the business world, shared insights into his entrepreneurial journey at the Building Wealth Today for Tomorrow Financial Empowerment Summit. The event took place at the UIC Forum in Chicago on October 12, 2024, and aimed to provide the community with resources and discussions on creating long-term wealth.
Melissa Conyears-Ervin, Chicago's city treasurer, emphasized the significance of Knowles' participation. "Bringing Mathew Knowles to our summit reflects our dedication to teaching real, sustainable wealth-building principles," she stated. "His focus on generational wealth and self-funded success aligns with our goal of helping Chicagoans achieve true economic mobility."
Knowles is renowned for managing Destiny’s Child, one of the most successful girl groups. His business skills are deeply rooted in his family history. His grandfather, Davis Hogue, was an entrepreneur who owned 300 acres of land and distributed moonshine.
In an interview with AFROTECH during the summit, Knowles recalled a lesson from his grandfather's ventures: “He took a hundred acres of that land and he leased it out to the paper mill in this little small town, Marion, AL. I’ll never forget this... imagine you as a farmer and they’re now paying you to take down the trees... then after they get the trees then you go behind them and farm. I thought that was genius.”
Knowles also revealed his decision to personally invest in Destiny’s Child albums and music video productions despite having label budgets available. He stated that they wanted "to control the narrative."
