Amazon is sponsoring two holiday initiatives in partnership with the Proviso Leyden Council for Community Action (PLCCA) this holiday season. With a $20,000 grant, Amazon is helping provide holiday meals and toys to more than 400 families in need in the Chicagoland area.
The first event, a Thanksgiving meal distribution, took place on November 19 at the PLCCA building on 411 Madison St, Maywood, IL. The second event, a Christmas distribution, is scheduled for December 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the same location.
Founded in 1968 by Bishop Dr. Claude Porter, PLCCA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advocating for social change by empowering individuals through education, training, and supportive services, according to their website. Serving low-income residents across Cook County's Proviso and Leyden Townships, Chicago's near West Side, and parts of South Suburban Cook County, PLCCA now operates approximately 30 community programs.
The organization assists about 30,000 clients annually, addressing the needs of diverse communities with significant minority populations. PLCCA's mission is to promote community development and self-sufficiency.
Several organizations across Chicago are offering free Thanksgiving turkeys and meals to help families in need this holiday season, according to Block Club Chicago. These giveaways are taking place at various locations, including St. James Catholic Church, St. Sabina, IMAN Health Center, Common Pantry, and more.
Many of these events are first-come, first-served, and provide additional groceries and support. The efforts aim to support low-income families and ensure everyone can enjoy a Thanksgiving meal, with some events even offering extra services like winter coat distributions and live music performances.
