A Country Club Hills woman has been charged with a felony after allegedly attempting to smuggle drug-soaked paper into Cook County Jail. Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced the charges against 47-year-old Nakeisha Andrews, who was apprehended by investigators from the Sheriff's Office.
On August 29, investigators were alerted to a possible attempt by Andrews to bring in drug-soaked paper during a visit to an inmate. Upon her arrival at the jail, investigators conducted a pat-down search and found an 8 x 10 piece of paper wrapped in plastic concealed inside her shirt.
The paper was sent for testing at the Illinois State Police forensic lab and returned positive results for heroin and fentanyl.
On October 30, Andrews, residing on the 4100 block of 189th Street, was taken into custody by Sheriff's investigators. She faces charges from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for Bringing a Controlled Substance into a Penal Institution, classified as a Class 1 felony.
Andrews attended her initial hearing on October 31 at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse. She was ordered released pending trial.
This year alone, the Sheriff’s Office has secured 59 charges related to possessing or smuggling drug-soaked paper into the jail. "The Sheriff’s Office will aggressively pursue criminal charges against anyone attempting to bring these dangerous substances into the jail," said officials.
The public is reminded that "the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law."
