Mathew Knowles, known for managing the iconic music group Destiny's Child, recently revealed a personal inspiration behind his decision to invest in the WNBA’s Chicago Sky. This insight was shared during his appearance at the Building Wealth Today for Tomorrow (BWTT) Financial Empowerment Summit held on October 12, 2024, at the UIC Forum in Chicago.
The event focused on promoting financial education and wealth-building within the Black community through workshops and discussions led by local financial experts and notable panelists such as Keke Palmer and Larenz Tate. Mathew Knowles took part in these discussions, offering perspectives from his own life experiences.
"Building Wealth Today for Tomorrow is the largest financial education program of its kind," stated Chicago’s City Treasurer Melissa Conyears Ervin. "It brings together experts and leaders from businesses, community organizations, and city, state, and federal agencies to lead workshops and discussions that help Chicagoans build a more financially secure future."
During his talk, Knowles reflected on his family background which influenced his entrepreneurial spirit. He was born to a father who worked as a truck driver earning $30 weekly and a mother who worked as a maid for $3 daily while selling quilts. These humble beginnings fueled his drive for success across various ventures.
This investment move into sports marks another chapter in Knowles’ diverse career portfolio. The former Destiny's Child manager credited Michelle Williams, one of the group's members alongside Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé, as playing a role in this decision-making process.
