A corrections deputy from Cook County has been indicted on new charges, according to an announcement by Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart. The deputy, Shadonna Jones, 54, is accused of providing her cell phone to an inmate at the Cook County Jail. The inmate allegedly used the device to send messages and access pornographic content.
Jones had previously faced charges in August for Class 3 Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver. This charge followed a search warrant executed in July at her Lynwood home as part of an investigation into drug-soaked paper being smuggled into the jail. During the search, investigators found numerous pages of drug-soaked paper along with an iPhone and an Android phone.
Further investigation revealed that on July 13, the Android phone was used by an inmate to visit pornographic websites, take selfies, and chat via Facebook Messenger. Records obtained from Jones' iPhone showed she exchanged text messages with the Android user during her work shift at the jail. Additionally, she was assigned to oversee the tier where this inmate was housed.
On October 24, Jones faced arraignment not only for the original drug-related charges but also for a new two-count indictment. These new charges include Delivery of Electronic Contraband to an Inmate of a Penal Institution by an Employee—a Class X Felony—and Official Misconduct—a Class 3 Felony.
