Kevin Johnson redefines success through connections and community impact

Kevin Johnson, Aon’s North America 3×3 Activation Leader and Chief Operating Officer, shared insights into his evolving understanding of success during a recent fireside chat. Once focused on career achievements and financial goals, Johnson now values connections and positive impacts as measures of true success.

Speaking with Sydni Joseph, Co-Founder of Big Plan Holdings, at the Metropolitan Club for a Chamber Emerging Leaders discussion, Johnson explained how this shift in perspective has influenced his interactions across all levels. "Everyone that I encounter, no matter what walk of life that they come from — I give them the same level of respect, the same level of care," he said.

Johnson's commitment to equality extends beyond professional interactions. He is involved in community service as a commissioner for police and fire services in his town and serves on the board of the Golden Apple Foundation. He also coaches baseball for visually impaired individuals. "I want to be involved because I want to make sure that everyone is taken care of," he stated.

Balancing these commitments with a career is challenging but essential for genuine success, according to Johnson. "You have to create that balance," he emphasized. "And even though work is a significant part of everything that we do, if you don’t take some time for yourself, for those you love, for your community, I honestly don’t think that you can be truly successful."

Johnson believes personal fulfillment enhances professional effectiveness. “Connecting with your complete life really helps you to be even more effective in your career,” he noted.

Ultimately, Johnson highlighted the importance of pursuing passions and nurturing relationships: “Find whatever it is that you love and do what you really want to do with your career... At the end of the day, doing what you love and being with the ones you love — that’s all that matters.”
