Chicago Quantum Summit explores future of global quantum technology

The Chicago Quantum Summit held on October 21-22, 2024, drew over 600 attendees to discuss the future of quantum technologies. The event, hosted by the University of Chicago's Rubenstein Forum, emphasized the early stages of a long-term global effort to bring quantum technologies from laboratories to practical applications. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the state's commitment to being at the forefront of this technological evolution.

The summit featured speakers from various sectors, including Noel Goddard, CEO of Qunnect, who discussed the challenges and timelines in developing quantum technology. Joe Altepeter from DARPA introduced the Quantum Benchmarking Initiative aimed at testing proposed quantum applications. Katie Pizzolato from IBM stressed the importance of recognizing that quantum technology is still in its infancy.

Charina Chou from Google Quantum AI spoke about talent development and the need for diverse skill sets in the field. Nationwide data suggests that many quantum jobs are accessible with a bachelor's degree or less, highlighting a shift in education requirements as the industry grows.

Walter Massey and Thomas Searles addressed building an inclusive workforce and academic programs across various educational levels. They highlighted initiatives like Quantum Game Night aimed at engaging young people in learning about quantum technologies.

The summit also focused on the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park and its potential impact on local communities and beyond. Governor Pritzker emphasized his commitment to fostering growth through this initiative, which has received significant financial backing from both state and federal sources.
