Selwyn Rogers joins National Academy of Medicine for contributions to trauma care

Selwyn O. Rogers Jr., a distinguished professor of surgery at the University of Chicago, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. The announcement was made on October 21, marking his inclusion among 100 individuals in the 2024 class.

Rogers is recognized for his work as a trauma surgeon and public health expert. He is the founding director of the Trauma Center and serves as Executive Vice President for Community Health Engagement at UChicago Medicine. His election to the Academy highlights his significant contributions to hospital-based violence interventions and medical-legal clinics that address social drivers of violent trauma.

Rogers advocates for a holistic public health approach with an equity lens to prevent firearms injuries. He leads an interdisciplinary team at the Trauma Center, focusing on treating patients with life-threatening injuries and expanding trauma care on Chicago's South Side.

In his role at UCM, Rogers collaborates with faculty and community members to address trauma care and health disparities. His research delves into healthcare needs of underserved populations, exploring how race and ethnicity impact surgical outcomes.

The National Academy of Medicine elects new members based on their major contributions to medical sciences, healthcare, and public health. The process includes selecting individuals from various fields beyond health professions.

Founded in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences as the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Medicine tackles critical issues in health, science, medicine, and policy.
