Prof. Philip V. Bohlman, a leading ethnomusicologist, will address the role of music in addressing global migration issues during his keynote speech at Humanities Day on October 26. Bohlman, who is the Ludwig Rosenberger Distinguished Service Professor and artistic director of the New Budapest Orpheum Society at the University of Chicago (UChicago), utilizes a multidisciplinary approach combining ethnography, historical research, and music performance.
"Ethnomusicologists study world music, which often occurs in places where human societies are in danger such as borderlands for migrants," Bohlman stated. "Music crosses borderlands and can connect people."
His presentation titled “On Goodness” will explore how ethnomusicologists interpret the phrase “doing good.” Members from the New Budapest Orpheum Society and Chicago Mehfil will join him to perform at Logan Center of the Arts Performance Hall.
Bohlman's contributions to ethnomusicology include his book "Music, Nationalism, and the Making of the New Europe," which earned him the Derek Allen Prize for Musicology from the British Academy. His edited work "The Cambridge History of World Music" received recognition with the Bruno Nettl Prize from the Society of Ethnomusicology. In 2015, he was nominated for a Grammy Award alongside his society for their double CD “As Dreams Fall Apart.”
In 2022, Bohlman was awarded the International Balzan Prize and has since organized symposia worldwide to foster discussions among young scholars about music's role in migration and borderland issues.
During an interview, Bohlman emphasized that ethnomusicologists often work in challenging environments to give voice through music: "To place it in simple terms, we help to find the good in their lives and societies." He noted ongoing student projects in Kurdistan, Rohingya refugee camps along Bangladesh-Myanmar borders, and impoverished Caribbean areas.
Discussing UChicago's influence on his work since joining in 1987 when no other faculty focused on ethnomusicology there until now with three tenured faculty members involved: "UChicago is ideal...a culture of interdisciplinary scholarship."
