The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has introduced a new public statements policy along with a revised open expression policy. These changes are part of the university's ongoing efforts to create an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives and the exchange of ideas are prioritized.
The development of these policies involved an inclusive process that included an open comments period and extensive consultations with various community stakeholders. The Senate Executive Committee, the Faculty Senate, the Academic Professionals Advisory Committee, the Staff Advisory Committee, and student government organizations were all engaged in reviewing these policies.
Both policies aim to promote intellectual growth and civil discourse at UIC while ensuring adherence to legal and ethical standards. The university encourages its community members to familiarize themselves with these updates as they are now in effect.
John Coronado, Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services and Co-chair of the Open Expression Task Force, expressed gratitude for the support from the university community. He emphasized UIC's commitment to maintaining values that foster learning, work, and engagement within local, national, and global communities.
Michael Ginsburg, Special Advisor to the Chancellor for Student Affairs and Co-chair of the Open Expression Task Force, also co-signed this announcement.
