Marie Lynn Miranda UIC Chancellor | University Of Illinois At Chicago
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) continues its dedication to maintaining a smoke-free campus. This commitment aligns with key State of Illinois legislation, including the Smoke-Free Illinois Act, the Smoke-Free Campus Act, and the Illinois Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act. These laws aim to create environments free from secondhand smoke risks.
UIC's policies, such as the UIC Cannabis Policy and the UIC Tobacco-Free Policy, reflect these legislative measures. Smoking is prohibited in public places on any State of Illinois college campus, including UIC. The ban covers all tobacco forms: cigarettes, cigars, pipes, water pipes (hookahs), chew, electronic cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco products.
These regulations ensure that students, staff, faculty, patients, visitors, and contractors can "Breathe Easy" in a smoke-free environment. The prohibition extends across university property including labs, buildings, classrooms, residential halls, and outdoor spaces like the quad.
Compliance with these rules means smoking is only permitted on public sidewalks bordering UIC properties. Non-compliance may result in warnings or fines.
Michael Ginsburg emphasized support for those considering quitting smoking: "The first step is as simple as exploring information and identifying support." He noted that positive health effects begin shortly after quitting. Resources are available through organizations like the American Cancer Society and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Sincerely,
Michael Ginsburg
