The University of Chicago community is set to welcome new graduate and undergraduate students to campus this week through various activities designed to introduce them to their peers and their new intellectual environment in Hyde Park.
On September 24, graduate students will participate in a Welcome Convocation at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. The event, starting at noon, will feature remarks from President Paul Alivisatos and Vice Provost Jason Merchant. Additional activities that day include a resource fair, a welcome event for international students, and a discussion on the UChicago tradition of free inquiry and expression.
Undergraduate students will begin moving into residence halls on September 24. The next day, members of the Class of 2028 will officially join the UChicago community during Opening Convocation. This event at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, which will be webcast starting at 3:30 p.m., will include remarks from President Alivisatos and Melina Hale, dean of the College. Following the convocation, members of the Class of 2028 will process through the Main Quadrangles amid an enthusiastic crowd gathered around Cobb Gate.
On September 26, Professor Patrick Jagoda will deliver this year’s Aims of Education address—a longstanding UChicago tradition that examines the purpose of a liberal arts education and encourages undergraduate students to reflect on their future in the College. The event, which will be webcast at 6:30 p.m., will be followed by small-group discussions in residence halls led by distinguished UChicago faculty.
