Northwestern University partners with City Colleges on early admissions agreement

CHICAGO—(September 19, 2024)—Northwestern University School of Professional Studies (SPS) and City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) have announced a partnership to facilitate early admissions for transfer students from CCC to Northwestern.

“This partnership highlights SPS’s dedication to working with City Colleges of Chicago to support adult learners,” said Dean Thomas Gibbons of Northwestern School of Professional Studies. “Our mutual commitment to provide high-quality education to students at all phases of their lives aligns seamlessly with the objectives of this collaboration. We are especially enthusiastic about the advantages our online undergraduate degree programs can offer to CCC students. Our programs are tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals juggling various responsibilities, making them an excellent fit for the diverse student population at City Colleges of Chicago.”

“We are excited to share that this early admission agreement will help our talented students seamlessly transfer to Northwestern School of Professional Studies so they can go on to earn their bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees,” said Provost and Chief Academic Officer Mark Potter, City Colleges of Chicago. “Through their work at City Colleges, we know our students are more than ready to embrace the rigorous coursework at SPS—a path that will ensure they thrive, grow, and become our city’s future leaders. We are thankful to SPS for also believing in our students and supporting them through this agreement.”

To qualify for early admission, CCC students must meet with SPS advisors and CCC transfer advisors while pursuing their associate degree. Students must have a minimum of 24 transferable semester credit hours and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The CCC-SPS transfer agreement includes several requirements:

- No more than 22.5 units (equivalent to 60 semester hours) may be accepted as transfer credits at SPS for its bachelor's degrees, except for the Bachelor of Philosophy in Communication degree which has a maximum limit of 21 units (equivalent to 56 semester hours).

- General education transfer credit from CCC will satisfy most general education requirements at SPS.

- CCC transfer students who have completed English 102 with a grade B or higher will be waived from the SPS requirement of English 111 Writing Seminar.

- Transfer students must complete the SPS requirement of English 205 Intermediate Composition.

The mission is to provide superior Northwestern education to outstanding students whose academic pursuits must be balanced with professional or personal commitments. SPS aims to be a national leader in continuing and professional education by offering innovative learning opportunities that cater to lifelong learning needs.
