UIC addresses rise in campus e-scooter thefts with preventive measures

Peter C. Nelson Dean of College of Engineering | University Of Illinois At Chicago

Due to a recent rise in the theft of e-scooters on campus and in the city of Chicago, members of the UIC community are being asked to be especially mindful when using and securing e-scooters and bicycles.

When using an e-scooter, users are advised to obey all laws and remain aware of their surroundings at all times. After finishing a ride, it is recommended to lock the e-scooter to a bike rack or another fixed object that is outside of pedestrian paths.

The UIC Police encourage individuals to register their e-scooters and bicycles through the Bicycle/e-scooter Registration program. This initiative aims to facilitate the return of property if it is recovered. More information about this program can be found on the Bicycle/e-scooter Registration webpage. It is also important to note that UIC policy prohibits the use of e-scooters on campus.

Community members are urged to report any suspicious activity around bike racks or e-scooters immediately to UIC Police. The principle remains: "If you see something, please say something!"

For questions or concerns, individuals can email uicpd@uic.edu.
