Fathom Events released “Santiago: The Camino Within,” a 68-minute documentary narrated by Bishop Donald Hying, in theaters for one day only on Tuesday.
“Go see this beautiful film about the Camino,” Hying urged his followers on Twitter before the viewing.
Hying has served as the bishop of the Diocese of Madison in Wisconsin since 2019, according to Wikipedia. He previously served as bishop of the Diocese of Gary from 2015 to 2019 and as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in Wisconsin from 2011 to 2015.
The new movie about the 1,000-year-old pilgrimage route, the Camino de Santiago in Spain, also called "The Way of St. James," takes viewers on a journey along the route, which leads to the Cathedral of Santiago, where St. James the Apostle is believed to be buried, according to Catholic News Agency.
Its secondary name has historical roots. Legend has it that the remains of the St. James the Great, one of the apostles, were discovered at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain after having thought to be lost. No one could explain how they got there, according to a summary of the film.
“Santiago: The Camino Within” is produced by Ahava Productions. The film takes viewers on the physically challenging pilgrimage route of the Camino de Santiago and aims to inspire them to go on their own spiritual journey. Distributed by Fathom Events, the movie seeks to encourage viewers to connect with God on a deeper level, Catholic News Agency reported.
The film not only captures the stunning scenery of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage but also shares the spiritual journeys of the pilgrims.
It was shown in 763 theaters across the country in both English and Spanish. In modern times, thousands of people continue to make the journey to Santiago, sometimes covering hundreds of miles, Catholic News Agency said.
The film follows pilgrims along the route, giving producers the ability to let them share “their stories and profound experiences about how walking the Camino changes them in different ways, viewers will be inspired to experience this pilgrimage as their own interior journey of discovery,” Fathom Events said in its film summary.
