Josephine's Southern Cooking, which has been a staple in the South Side community for almost 40 years, may be forced to close this year.
"My mother is heartbroken right now," Victor Love, co-owner of Josephine's Southern Cooking, told ABC 7 Chicago. "She's given out of her lack, she's given out of her abundance. I'm just hoping that people would remember that and come back here by the droves and the floods."
South Side's Josephine’s Southern Cooking, located at 436 East 79th Street for nearly 40 years, is in danger of closing permanently due to a lack of business and revenue. The restaurant, originally opened by "Mother" Josephine Wade in 1987 under the name Captain Hard Times, is now owned and operated by her son, Victor Love.
Love has made numerous upgrades to the restaurant.
Josephine's Southern Cooking recently had a grand reopening after renovations and a redesign in hopes of drawing new business to the restaurant. Love has hired new staff and chefs, instituted valet parking and increased security measures, according to Block Club Chicago. There has also been an addition of WiFi for customers who want to come and work at Josephine's.
According to Love, if the business doesn't pick up this year, he'll have no choice but to shut down Josephine's South Side location. However, he is hoping to open another location in Bronzeville, South Loop, Wicker Park, Bucktown, suburban Schaumburg or Woodfield.
Josephine's menu offers a variety of soul-food-inspired staples for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even a late-night menu on the weekends. Some popular menu items include beef liver and onions, chicken gumbo, fried catfish, jerk chicken mac-and-cheese and more, according to Josephine's Southern Cooking.
