Semicolon Bookstore's windows highlight 'some great titles for every reader in your life' during the upcoming holiday season

Semicolon Bookstore, a well-known small business and gallery in Chicago, has announced that it plans to display suggested holiday titles in the store's windows.

"We’re getting these holiday windows ready! We’ll be highlighting some great titles for every reader in your life this season. We’ll be doing the big reveal next week on Small Business Saturday," Semicolon wrote in a Nov. 17 Facebook post.

Featured in TimeOut's list of "10 black-owned businesses that are shaping Chicago right now," Semicolon Bookstore is the only black-woman-owned bookstore in Chicago. Semicolon is a community bookstore in Wicker Park that "focuses on female, BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) and LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) authors and artists," according to TimeOut. "Danielle Mullen and the Semicolon team have provided a safe space where locals can enjoy reading and relaxing."

According to TimeOut, Mullen is dedicated to addressing the "ongoing challenges of low-literacy skills" in low-income neighborhoods in Chicago. Semicolon set up a donation program called Clear the Shelves, which raised $150,000 to give books and financial aid to those in need, TimeOut said.

Semicolon opened in 2019 and is located at 1715 West Division St. in Chicago. According to PR Newswire, Mullen got the idea for Semicolon from her love of reading at museums.

"I wanted literature and art to kinda collide and create this experience that would further connect the two worlds -- or at least cause a lover of one to want to know more about the other," Mullen told PR Newswire. Her intent for Semicolon was to connect indie art and literature to mold a "creative and enjoyable space."

According to Semicolon's website, the store's mission is to be "committed to nurturing the connection between literature, art and the pursuit of knowledge; while also using the power of words to better our community."

In addition to the special titles in the window, Semicolon promised a "big reveal" on Nov. 26 during Small Business Saturday.
