The School District 146 School Board recently discussed updated student report cards and new "family learning target sheets."
During an Oct. 11 Board of Education meeting, Wendy Wolgan, director of the district's Curriculum and Instruction, discussed how the K-5 standards report card is being revised. The committee announced it has chosen a new template for a condensed report card that puts less focus on subskills and now primarily focuses on essential learning and the priority standards. Specials teachers have been collaborating on the new priority standards, as well as the various subjects working on their standards. The school board also discussed new "family learning target sheets" to help students identify and reach priority goals.
"We're also going to be working on generating what we call family learning target sheets, which are separate from the report card. But these are sheets that will help," Wolgan said during the meeting. "They're very student-friendly. They have 'I can' statements to help the learner and the family that's helping the learner kind of identify all the learning going on towards these priority standards and essential learning in the classroom. So we're very excited about that work."
Wolgan also talked about homework guidelines for the school year, which they have discussed with parents and families in the district with the intention of understanding the role of homework within the families. Soon, they would like to send out a survey to all parents in the district and to all students 3-8 to help create more meaningful homework guidelines for the district.
Superintendent Jeff Stawick also mentioned an induction ceremony that happened at the end of September at Central Middle school, where 48 new members were inducted into the National Juniors Honor Society. Five of those students spoke at the ceremony as representatives of the student body.
